Turkey’s Maras coregi gains EU geographical indication
In a message shared on a local Turkish social platform, Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli highlighted that the famed bun is now the newest item from Kahramanmaras to obtain EU status, joining other registered regional specialties such as Caglayancerit Cevizi and Maras Tarhanasi. “With this, the number of our EU-registered products has reached 44,” he said.
Yumakli remarked that the longstanding food culture of Kahramanmaras “continues to cross borders,” reflecting the expanding international recognition of the region’s culinary traditions.
Information released by the minister describes Maras coregi as notable for its unique preparation techniques, stone-oven baking, and adherence to traditional craftsmanship. The bun has held a prominent place in local households for generations, particularly during the month of Ramadan, when it is widely enjoyed.
