EU Rolls Out Digital Networks Act to Modernize Connectivity Rules
The legislative proposal seeks to establish favorable conditions enabling telecommunications operators to invest in deploying cutting-edge fibre and mobile infrastructure that serves as the foundation for emerging technologies including artificial intelligence and cloud computing platforms, the Commission announced in a press release.
The act would permit companies to deliver services throughout the entire EU while maintaining registration in just a single member state. Additionally, the framework would establish an EU-level spectrum authorization system aimed at fostering pan-European satellite communication offerings, while enhancing uniformity in national spectrum allocation through extended license durations and establishing renewals as the standard procedure.
The legislative package would mandate that member states submit obligatory national transition roadmaps in 2029 detailing strategies to eliminate copper-based networks and transition to advanced telecommunications infrastructure between 2030 and 2035.
The proposal will be forwarded to the European Parliament and the Council of the EU for legislative approval.
