Cyberattack Hits European Commission’s Mobile Infrastructure
Hackers breached the Commission’s remote administration platform, which manages smartphones and other mobile devices provided to staff, according to reports from tech outlet 01net. The incident was detected on Jan. 30 by the EU’s central cybersecurity service, CERT-EU.
Although the attackers accessed the platform, initial investigations showed they did not gain access to the mobile devices themselves. The Commission confirmed last week that the breach was contained and the system was cleaned within nine hours, with no mobile devices compromised.
In a written statement, the Commission said: "The Commission takes seriously the security and resilience of its internal systems and data and will continue to monitor the situation. It will take all necessary measures to ensure the security of its systems. The incident will be thoroughly reviewed and will inform the Commission's ongoing efforts to enhance its cybersecurity capabilities."
Experts warned that, despite being foiled, the stolen information could still be used to carry out targeted phishing attacks against Commission staff.
